A disturbing and alarming chapter has been written in Pakistan’s judicial history. Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri, who dedicated five years of service as a judge of the Islamabad High Court, was shockingly dismissed and sent home within a mere two hours, without any chance to defend himself, present arguments through his lawyers, or even respond. This blatant act of judicial misconduct was carried out through the disgraceful transfer of Justice Jahangiri, and the appointment of Justice Sarfraz Dogar, a recent transfer as the new Chief Justice. Adding insult to injury, Justice Azam Khan, appointed less than a year ago as an Additional Judge, played a complicit role in this orchestrated outrage.
This egregious incident exposes how the judiciary in Pakistan has been reduced to a puppet in the hands of the establishment and the corrupt government. The passage of the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments has mercilessly dismantled judicial independence, turning the judiciary into a mere tool for political manipulation, institutional control, and suppression of justice. This is not just an attack on the judiciary, it is an assault on justice itself, a deliberate attempt to silence dissent and uphold the interests of the powerful at the expense of the rule of law.
