WHY IS AN ELDERLY, SICK FATHER BEING PUNISHED FOR HIS SON’S POLITICS?
Another deeply troubling case has emerged from Mianwali.
Muhammad Ashraf, over 70 years old and the father of Aamir Khan Niazi, President PTI Isa Khel Tehsil, has reportedly been taken into custody by Mianwali Police.
According to the account, police came to the family home looking for Aamir Khan Niazi. When they could not find him, they allegedly took away his elderly father instead.
Muhammad Ashraf is reported to be suffering from chronic liver disease, with medical reports documenting his condition. Despite repeated concerns about his age and deteriorating health, his family alleges that Punjab Police has not released him and that he is being kept in what appears to be unlawful detention.
If there is a lawful case against Aamir Khan Niazi, then arrest Aamir Khan Niazi in accordance with the law.
His elderly father is not a substitute.
His illness is not a bargaining chip.
His family is not responsible for another person’s politics.
Serious questions need immediate answers:
On what legal grounds is Muhammad Ashraf being detained?
Has he been formally arrested in any registered case?
Has he been produced before a court?
Why was an elderly, medically vulnerable man taken away when police were reportedly searching for his son?
And who will be responsible if his health deteriorates in custody?
This alleged practice of targeting parents and relatives because the person police seek is unavailable must end.
The Punjab Government and Punjab Police should immediately disclose Muhammad Ashraf’s legal status, ensure independent medical examination and access to his family and lawyers, and release him immediately if there is no lawful basis for his detention.
No father should be punished for his son’s politics.
